In 1909 a family named Bishop bought a failed mill in Pendleton, Oregon and turned it into a success story. They began making wool blankets but their most famous product was the Pendleton wool shirt. Now available in a variety of plaid colors this shirt has gone down in history. They are known as the shirt worn by everyone from the sportsmen to the worker to the country gentleman. They have always had a reputation for quality and comfort unsurpassed by no one. The Pendleton wool shirt was worn from the early 1900s not long after the company opened. It was available in gray only for the first few years and was well appreciated for its resilience, warmth and above all its comfort.

Then in 1924 big changes came, as the Pendleton wool shirt was no available in just grey. A whole new line was introduced that was colorful instead of plain. These original colors are responsible for the colors that the shirts are now available in. The standard Pendleton wool shirt has a full zippered front with buttons on each sleeve cuff. The shirt has two angled pockets midway as well as two chest pockets that have flap covers. The tail of the shirt is extra long and cut square for extra comfort. The shirts are still made the same today

So well known was the Pendleton wool hit in American that is was said at one time the there was barely a house in the whole Untied States that did not have at least one of them hanging in the closet. But that seems to have change in recent years. Pendleton has been closing its woolen mills in several locations because of a downturn in the sales of the famous Pendleton wool shirt. Sales have dropped to twenty five percent of what they were a mere fifteen years ago.

Interestingly the business still remains in the family with the great grandson of the original owner running the company right now. He has commented on how sad he is to see the Pendleton wool shirt having lost its popularity by such extremes and hopes to see it back on top someday.
